Friday Feature: Paperback soap-operas starring teens...

Private: The Web Series
. . . a.k.a. the Private Series by Kate Brian
Who: Kieran Scott writing as Kate Brian

What: The Private series, particularly the first four books (Private, Invitation Only, Untouchable and Confessions) and the web series (so f*ing hilarious!).

When: The Web Series editions of the first four books came out August 2009.

Where: Local bookstores and libraries for the novels. The dramatizations of the stories can be found at the official Private site.
Invitation Only: The Web Series (Private)

Why: I recently read She's So Dead to Us (review forthcoming) by Kieran Scott who writes the Private books under the psuedonym Kate Brian. After starting SSDTU, I was immediately reminded of the four books by her that I read late last summer. They were randomly sent along for review one day. I didn't intend to read them so soon but, after a recommendation from a friend, I picked book one up on a whim. As soon as I set that one down I quickly devoured the remaining three in my possession. Once I ran out of those, I checked out the new web episodes out of curiosity.

Confessions: The Web Series (Private)Talk about guilty pleasures! The kids in this ongoing story are like miniature versions of the whacked-out adult often found on shows like General Hospital and One Life to Live. I get a kick out of the outrageous behavior and plot twists. Obviously there's not much substance to these books - but that's the point. It's pure, mindless fluff that's simply addictive like so many of the bad-for-us things we can't stay away from (like my achilles heel - ice cream!). The web series is even better (or worse, depending on how you want to look at it). The acting, summed up novel plot points, and low-budget production all come together in mega-blend of melodrama. Bonus: The episodes are short (only a few minutes each) so it's like watching an extended trailer.

Note: The web series takes some liberties with the storyline but, in general, it stays pretty true to the spirit of the books.
